Netflix (NFLX) shares surged 7.8%. Netflix is negotiating with Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) to make its content available on set-top boxes via a Netflix app, according to reports. However, its not clear how close they are to a deal, with some operators worried about Netflix using the app as a Trojan Horse to sell programs that compete with their own offerings, The Wall Street Journal said. Last month, Swedens Com Hem and Britains Virgin Media reached deals to allow Netflix to be accessed via Tivo set-top boxes, according to Reuters. !

And so will be the proposed $45.2 billion engagement of Comcast Corp (NSDQ: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable Inc (NYSE: TWC) before they can be joined as one.

cinz/Flickr Apple (AAPL) is in talks with Comcast to enter into a deal for a streaming-television service that would allow Apple set-top boxes to bypass congestion on the Web, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The discussions are in early stages and there are a lot of hurdles to be crossed before a definitive agreement could be reached, the Journal said. Apple, which wants its TV service's traffic to be separated from public internet traffic over the "last mile" for faster transmission, is looking for special treatment from Comcast's (CMCSA) (CMCSK) cables to bypass congestion, the report said. Comcast and Apple declined to comment on the report. Apple has been in talks for a faster TV set-top box with Time Warner Cable (TWC), which recently agreed to be bought by Comcast. Apple's $99 TV box competes with similar streaming devices from Roku and Google (GOOG). Netflix agreed last month to pay Comcast for faster speeds, throwing open the possibility that more content companies will have to shell out for better service.

The proposed merger of Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC) will create a cable distribution colossus with 30 million subscribers. That’s almost seven times as many customers as its next biggest rival. Content providers worry that a bigger Comcast means less room for negotiation when it comes to fees. For bigger firms such as Disney (DIS), it could actually be a blessing rather than a curse.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) has launched Windows 8.1, kind of.

A preview was unveiled Wednesday. At a conference in San Francisco, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged that the company pushed hard to get people to adopt a radical new tile-based "Modern" user interface in Windows 8. "Let's make it easier to start applications the way we're used to," Ballmer told the audience of software developers. "What we will show you today is a refined blend of our Desktop experience and our Modern experience."

In an effort to capture the growing demand for mobile-focused devices, Microsoft has updated its Windows 8 operating system with a slew of new features:

Internet Explorer 11:Built for touch, the new Internet Explorer includes faster load times and side-by-side browsing.

For now, the update released Wednesday is a "preview." Only those who choose to download and install the update will see the updates. When launched later this year to the public, Windows 81. will be free for current Windows 8 users.

David Ryder/Getty ImagesAmazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos NEW YORK -- Amazon.com (AMZN) is taking direct aim at mobile payment systems such as Square by introducing the Amazon Local Register, a credit-card processing device and mobile app designed to help small business owners accept payments through their smartphones and tablets. The move places the largest U.S. e-commerce retailer in competition with Square and other established mobile payment processing systems such as eBay's (EBAY) PayPal Here and Intuit's (INTU) GoPayment. Amazon's technology includes a card reader that attaches to a smartphone, Kindle or tablet. The reader processes credit or debit card payments via a secure Amazon network, the same one that processes Amazon.com purchases. The service is designed to serve on-the-go small business owners who might otherwise only accept cash or checks, including massage therapists, food truck operators and artists who sell their work at outdoor fairs. Small businesses can start using Local Register by creating an account at http://localregister.amazon.com. Businesses must buy Amazon's card reader for $10, and download the free mobile app from the Amazon app store, the Apple app store or Google (GOOG) Play. The app works on most smartphones and tablets, including the Kindle Fire. Similar to Amazon's strategy in many of its businesses, the company aims to compete on price in the mobile payment arena. For customers who sign up for the service by Oct. 31, Amazon will take as its fee 1.75 percent of each payment processed, or each "swipe" of the card, a special rate that will last until Jan. 1, 2016. For people who sign up after Oct. 31, Amazon will take a service fee of 2.5 percent of each payment processed. The first $10 in transaction fees will be credited back to the customer, essentially paying for the card reader. That's below most of its competitors' rates. Square takes a fee of 2.75 percent of each transaction. PayPal Here takes 2.7 percent of each tra

If you're one of these investors, here are two quantifiable investment opportunities I've came across this month: Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) .

Perhaps if SanDisk decides to try a little harder, it could pawn its wares through eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) , which could use some business of its own. Shares in the web-based auction site cratered 5.9% Thursday, as Wall Street was disappointed by slowing sales growth. Though 14% revenue growth in a wildly competitive environment like online retail ain't shabby, it's less than half the 29% pace seen a year ago. With PayPal sales growth also easing rapidly, it looks like the company may finally be reaching maturity. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but growth investors are leaving in hordes.

Although oil prices are at multi year lows, nowmight be the time to start taking a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks like TETRA Technologies, Inc (NYSE: TTI), Exterran Holdings, Inc (NYSE: EXH) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP)as oil and natural gas prices willinevitably rise once again. To start with, natural gas compression services areneeded to transport natural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. In addition, compression servicesare used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. As for so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR, itsa generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with these potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies are impacted by (the temporary)low oil and gas commodity prices and so are the share prices for publicly traded stocks in the space.

While the ongoing implosion of crude oil prices has put high-profile names like Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) and Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) in the limelight - and the hot seat - all the noise surrounding those and other names may have distracted investors from looking at the oil rout in an opportunistic light rather than through the panic-colored glasses that have proven so damaging to the likes of LINE and CHK. Rather than fret over how difficult life was going to be for Linn Energy, Chesapeake Energy, and all their peers now that the price of oil was at or below the cost of drilling for it, investors should have been looking at companies that make drilling for oil cheaper and more cost-effective. Mid cap oil services stocks Dresser-Rand Group Inc (NYSE: DRC) andFlowserve Corp (NYSE: FLS) and small cap Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP) are all direct or indirect players in the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) sector among other niches. Of course, it might seem strange to be talking about oil services or enhanced oil recovery stocks when the bottom has fallen out from under the price of oil but consider the following two charts from WTRG Economicsand Gasbuddy.com:

Jin Lee/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesAmazon executive Peter Larson with the Fire TV. The Fire TV from Amazon.com (AMZN) raises the bar for set-top devices in new and unusual ways. Wednesday's debut came with plenty of positive surprises -- and a negative, the price. Amazon has historically priced its products at the low end of the spectrum, something that it learned quickly after introducing the Kindle e-reader at $399 in 2007 before getting aggressive with price cuts. Fire TV hit the market at $99, and while that may seem reasonable compared to what streaming devices were fetching just a few years ago, it's nowhere close to being one of the cheaper Web-savvy boxes for video buffs. Google's (GOOG) Chromecast turned heads at $35 last year, and entry-level Roku players can be had for less than $50. Apple (AAPL) is at the high end of the range at $99, but even Amazon.com itself is selling them for less than $93 these days. Apple, Roku, and Google have each reportedly sold millions of their devices that use Wi-Fi connectivity to stream Internet videos on TV screens. Can Amazon make a difference as the most expensive option in a crowded playing field?

Samsung Is Latest Foreign Punchbag For China's CCTV

Fresh from its assertion that Starbucks coffee is overpriced in China – not to mention foul-tasting – China's state broadcaster CCTV has taken aim at Samsung over faulty chips in smartphones. A CCTV report found that its popular Galaxy handsets were crashing frequently. Bloomberg reports that Samsung, the top-selling handset producer in China, told CCTV that it was fixing the faulty phones for free. Another strike to CCTV, which has become a thorn in the side of foreign brands from Yum Brands to Apple. A parallel wave of government probes into price-fixing and backhanders by multinationals has also put them on guard.

Media exposes of poor service and ripoffs by consumer companies are populist fare in most countries, and China is no exception. Dirty slaughterhouses should be exposed, along with crashing phones (or healthcare websites). The high price of goods in China certainly annoys consumers, which is why CCTV seized on the different price for lattes in China and Chicago to try to show that Starbucks was profiteering (it claims that its margins are similar in U.S.) But let's face it, these campaigns are mostly froth. CCTV goes after foreign brands that can be shamed into kowtowing. Starbucks charges high prices for crap coffee. So do other cafes in China. But Starbucks is American, and so fair game for the party's broadcast monopoly.

Top 10 Forestry Stocks To Own Right Now

Pimco's Bill Gross argues that credit isn't growing fast enough to support robust growth.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) In the modern economy, credit is king, according to Pimco's Bill Gross.

In a monthly investment outlook filled with swine and pot references (more on that later), the bond chief argues that credit isn't being created quickly enough to support the rosy growth forecasts for the economy and financial markets.

The reasons? A shrinking government deficit means the government is no longer as big a source of credit. The Federal Reserve is also scaling back on its monthly bond purchases. And Gross does not think the private sector is picking up the slack.

"...as credit goes, so go the markets, one might legitimately say, and I do most emphatically say that!," Gross wrote.

Non-traditional MLPs like Susser and Lehigh Gas Partners (NYSE: LGP) have risks and opportunities that are different from the midstream mainstream. Such MLPs can provide some diversification from the midstream MLPs that make up the bulk of the space, with less commodity and execution risk than most upstream partnerships. On the other hand, they are unlikely to have the same potential upside and growth opportunities as most midstream names. I might consider Susser as part a broader portfolio of MLPs, but it wouldn’t be a core holding in my own portfolio.

With investment gurus Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio) and Manning & Napier Advisors buying the company shares this past quarter, I believe this company business model is worth a deeper look.

    Running the Market

As the only brewer in Chile with a nationwide distribution network, United Breweries benefits from significant economies of scale, in addition to its brand power. The company product portfolio not only features the Cristal beer brand, but also includes wine, spirits and company-owned non-alcoholic beverages. In addition to this, the firm benefits from licenses to sell PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) and Heineken beverages, while also importing Anheuser Busch Inbev SA (ADR) (BUD) Budweiser beer to Chile and Argentina. This strong market position has allowed the firm to generate excess returns on invested capital above 20%, making it an attractive investment.

Furthermore, United Breweriesbusiness model is focused on market expansion, and in 2013 the company raised 15% of its market capital (CLP 340 billion) in order to fun acquisitions in Paraguay and Argentina. This latter country has been particularly endorsing the firm growth, boosting 2006 16% market share to 23% in 2012. This raise is probably due to the CLP 27 billion that the brewer spent on capital expenditures in Argentina. Looking forward, the company is set on expanding its core businesses by targeting the non-alcoholic Argentine market, the Chilean snack and dairy industry, as well as expanding into nearby markets of Peru, Uruguay, Colombia or Ecuador. And although the risk of an overpayment for acquisitions remains, I believe the company cost advantage in serving the Southern region of Chile will allow for margins to stay intact.

    Valuation and Risks

Nevertheless, United Breweriesmarket dominance in Chile t

After a couple of capital increases and what looks like a weak strategy for its growth in different South American countries, Chile's beer king Compania Cervecerias Unidas (CCU) – most commonly knows as CCU - is selling at a steep discount to its peers. In other words, being down by 23% year to date, I think it might be the time to start thinking of buying CCU's shares.

5 Stocks Set to Soar on Bullish Earnings

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Short-sellers hate being caught short a stock that reports a blowout quarter. When this happens, we often see a tradable short squeeze develop as the bears rush to cover their positions to avoid big losses. Even the best short-sellers know that it's never a great idea to stay short once a bullish earnings report sparks a big short-covering rally.

This is why I scan the market for heavily shorted stocks that are about to report earnings. You only need to find a few of these stocks in a year to help enhance your portfolio returns -- the gains become so outsized in such a short time frame that your profits add up quickly.

That said, let's not forget that stocks are heavily shorted for a reason, so you have to use trading discipline and sound money management when playing earnings short-squeeze candidates. It's important that you don't go betting the farm on these plays and that you manage your risk accordingly. Sometimes the best play is to wait for the stock to break out following the report before you jump in to profit off a short squeeze. This way, you're letting the trend emerge after the market has digested all of the news.

Of course, sometimes the stock is going to be in such high demand that you risk missing a lot of the move by waiting. That's why it can be worth betting prior to the report -- but only if the stock is acting technically very bullish and you have a very strong conviction that it is going to rip higher. Just remember that even when you have that conviction and have done your due diligence, the stock can still get hammered if The Street doesn't like the numbers or guidance.

If you do decide to bet ahead of a quarter, then you might want to use options to limit your capital exposure. Heavily shorted stocks are usually the names that make the biggest post-earnings moves and have the most volatility. I personally prefer to wait until all the earnings-related news is out for a heavily shorted stock and then jump in and trade the prevailing trend.

With that in mind, here's a look at several stocks that could experience big short squeezes when they report earnings this week.

Thor Industries

My first earnings short-squeeze trade idea is recreational vehicle maker Thor Industries (THO), which is set to release numbers on Thursday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Thor Industries to report revenue of $964.54 million on earnings of 95 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float Thor Industries is notable at 6.7%. That means that out of the 50.23 million shares in the tradable float, 3.01 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of THO could easily rip sharply higher post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, THO is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares moving higher from its low of $34.38 to its recent high of $55.93 a share. During that uptrend, shares of THO have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of THO within range of triggering a big breakout trade post earnings.

If you're bullish on THO, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $55.29 to its 52-week high at $55.93 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 397,012 shares. If that breakout hits, then THO will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $65 to $70 a share.

I would simply avoid THO or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops back below some key near-term support levels at its 50-day moving average of $53.11 to $52.52 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then THO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at $49.28 to $45 a share.

Finish Line

Another potential earnings short-squeeze play is mall-based specialty retailer Finish Line (FINL), which is set to release its numbers on Friday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Finish Line to report revenue of $428.05 million on earnings of 45 cents per share.

Just recently, Piper Jaffray upgraded shares of Finish Line to neutral from underweight, citing a more favorable outlook for the company's Macy's initiative and easing comparisons. Piper raised its price target on shares of FINL to $21 from $19.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Finish Line is pretty high at 11%. That means that out of the 47.95 million shares in the tradable float, 5.32 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 6.3%, or by 316,000 shares. If the bears are caught pressing their bets into a strong quarter, then shares of FINL could rip sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts rush to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, FINL is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending modestly for the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $20.51 to its recent high of $23.65 a share. During that move, shares of FINL have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of FINL within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're in the bull camp on FINL, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 52-week high at $23.65 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 550,303 shares. If that breakout hits, then FINL will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $30 to $35 a share.

I would simply avoid FINL or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below its 50-day moving average of $21.98 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then FINL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at 20.50 to its 200-day moving average of $19.99 a share.

Vail Resorts

One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is adventure sports facilities and ski resorts player Vail Resorts (MTN), which is set to release numbers on Friday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Vail Resorts to report revenue of $117.82 million on a loss of $1.71 per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Vail Resorts stands at 5%. That means that out of the 35.43 million shares in the tradable float, 1.79 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 7%, or by 116,000 shares. If the bears are caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of MTN could spike sharply higher post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, MTN is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $60.01 to its recent high of $71.18 a share. During that uptrend, shares of MTN have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of MTN within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on MTN, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $70.95 a share to its 52-week high at $71.18 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 137,456 shares. If that breakout hits, then MTN will set up enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $80 to $85 a share.

I would avoid MTN or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops back below its 50-day moving average of $68.19 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then MTN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at $65 to $62 a share.

AZZ

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is electrical equipment and components maker AZZ (AZZ), which is set to release numbers on Friday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect AZZ to report revenue of $202.83 million on earnings of 66 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for AZZ sits at 2.9%. That means that out of the 24.47 million shares in the tradable float, 696,000 shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of AZZ could spike sharply higher post-earnings as the bears look to cover some of their bets.

From a technical perspective, AZZ is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares moving higher from its low of $34.61 to its recent high of $44.69 a share. During that uptrend, shares of AZZ have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of AZZ within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on AZZ, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $44.69 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 229,856 shares. If that breakout triggers, the AZZ will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $49.10 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give AZZ a chance to trend north of $50 a share.

I would simply avoid AZZ or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below its 200-day at $41.10 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then AZZ will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at its 50-day of $38.70 a share to $36 to $35 a share.

Jabil Circuit

My final earnings short-squeeze play is semiconductor player Jabil Circuit (JBL), which is set to release numbers on Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Jabil Circuit to report revenue of $4.51 billion on earnings of 54 cents per share.

Just recently, Stifel lowered its EPS estimates for Jabil's November quarter to 58 cents per share from 63 cents per share, due to BlackBerry's weaker than expected smartphone sales. The firm lowered its fiscal 2014 EPS estimate for Jabil to $2.44 per share from $2.57 per share, but kept its $26 a share price target and buy rating on the stock.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Jabil Circuit sits at 2.6%. That means that out of the 182.48 million shares in the tradable float, 4.63 million shares are sold short by the bears. Any bullish earnings news could easily spark a decent short-covering rally for shares of JBL post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, JBL is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been trending sideways for the last two months, with shares moving between $22.37 on the downside and $24.32 on the upside. Any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range could trigger a big breakout trade for shares of JBL post-earnings.

If you're in the bull camp on JBL, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $24.13 a share to its 52-week high at $24.32 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 1.68 million shares. If that breakout triggers, then JBL will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $30 to $35 a share.

I would avoid JBL or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below both its 50-day at $23.15 a share to more key near-term support levels at $22.98 to $22.37 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then JBL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support levels at its 200-day of $20.04 a share to $18 a share.

Getty Images Bitcoin made headlines last year when the value of all outstanding pieces of the electronic currency reached nearly $10 billion. It's not just speculators drawn to the new currency. Many businesses are also attempting to cash in on this growth: Several public companies, including Zynga (ZNGA) and Overstock.com (OSTK), accept Bitcoins as a form of payment. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen's firm has invested nearly $50 million in Bitcoin-related ventures, and it is looking to invest even more. And the Winklevoss twins -- who notoriously accused Facebook's (FB) Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea -- have been "in dialogue" with the SEC about opening the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to Bloomberg. Yet a new survey from TheStreet.com (TST) reveals that 76 percent of consumers are not familiar with Bitcoin -- and 79 percent would never consider owning a currency like it. Does this signal opportunity for savvy investors? Or is this a fad you'd be wise to avoid? For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. So far, so good. Less edifying, though, is the repeated contrast of Berkshire track record of profitability to State Farm…even though, as a mutual company, State Farm profitability goals are inherently different from for-profit insurers like Berkshire. It true that through year-end 2013, Berkshire underwriters have ow operated at an underwriting profit for eleven consecutive years, but so have ACE (ACE), American Financial (AFG), AmTrust Financial (AFSI), Arch Capital (ACGL), Chubb (CB), HCC (HCC), Progressive (PGR), RLI (RLI), and W.R. Berkley (WRB), any or all of whom provide a more meaningful comparison than contrasting Berkshire results to a company that not out to produce a profit in the first place.
