Facebook (NASDAQ: FB ) CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly introduced a new organization he co-founded with other tech leaders, FWD.us, in a Washington Post Op-Ed yesterday, saying it will advocate on issues including immigration reform, education, and investments in scientific discoveries.
According to Zuckerberg's article, immigration reform is the key issue the organization intends to take on. "We have a strange immigration policy for a nation of immigrants. And it's a policy unfit for today's world," he wrote.
The Facebook CEO explained that his great-grandparents immigrated to the United States, entering through Ellis Island, and that he and his family wouldn't be where they are, "without a welcoming immigration policy, a great education system and the world's leading scientific community that created the Internet."
Zuckerberg wrote about what he calls the "knowledge economy" in which "the most important resources are the talented people we educate and attract to our country. "A knowledge economy can scale further, create better jobs and provide a higher quality of living for everyone in our nation."

The Internet of Things is about to get a little smaller. Make that a lot smaller -- so small you could put it on a pill and become a thing on the Internet yourself. Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL ) unveiled a new ARM Holdings (NASDAQ: ARMH ) -based microcontroller chip last month, dubbed the Kinetis KL02, that has everything necessary on board to produce, track, record, and analyze the essential information that device creators might need in a package smaller than your pinky toenail. That's it over to the left -- all 1.9 millimeters by 2 millimeters of it.

The real key for TI will be whether its analog chips can gain greater application. General Electric's Industrial Internet project continues to move forward, and connecting networks of machines in order to improve communication and gather data should require plenty of sensor-chips of the type in which TI specializes. Moreover, Cisco Systems and its Internet of Things initiative also have promise both for TI and for Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL ) , which came out with a new microcontroller chip earlier this year that could potentially work together with TI-made Wi-Fi transmitted chips to facilitate communication. Freescale is tiny compared to TI, but a partnership there could help both companies make more from the opportunity than they could separately.

Many technology companies have overhanging lawsuits and, very often, they are dismissed, or have minimal impact. For example, Freescale Semiconductor, (NYSE: FSL ) filed a complaint against Marvell, and then Marvell filed a complaint against Freescale, only to have both complaints dismissed. However, investors may be sensitive to this sort of thing with respect to Marvell given that, unless Marvell can successfully appeal the judgment made against it in the CMU case, it stands to fork over about $1.54 billion in past damages and post-judgment royalties. It would also need to pay ongoing royalties on the sale of hard disk controller chips, although it would probably find a way to design around those patents pretty quickly in this case.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Burrows]
MediSwipe (MWIP) has tripled, with MWIP stock up 200%. Cannabis Science (CBIS) is closing in on quadrupling, as CBIS stock gained 273%. And GreenGro Technologies (GRNH)? Brace yourself, because GRNH stock is up over 1,000% … including an 18% so far today.

But it doesn’t end there. Investors should run away from all OTC marijuana stocks, including Medical Marijuana (MJNA), Cannabis Science (CBIS), CannaVest (CANV), MediSwipe (MWIP) and GreenGro Technologies (GRNH). As the SEC warns:
- [By James E. Brumley]
If it seems like the buzz surrounding marijuana stocks like Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Hemp, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HEMP), and GreenGro Technologies, Inc. (OTCMKTS:GRNH) has been a little louder than usual the last few days, you're not crazy - it has been louder, and particularly bullish. GRNH shares advanced 37% in December. HEMP is up 166% for the past two weeks. MJNA has jumped 47% in just the past couple of days. Well, as it turns out, it's not just mere coincidence that GreenGro Technologies, Hemp, Medical Marijuana, and a bunch of other cannabis-related names have perked up of late. And, odds are pretty good they'll all continue to do well (even of the pace slows a bit) in 2014.

But, as the Huffington Post points out, most of the companies that stand to benefit are very small–they make micro caps look big–trade over the counter–good bye liquidity. That includes transaction-processing company MediSwipe (MWIPD), GreenGro Technologies (GRNH) Medbox (MDBX), which makes dispenser for high-risk drugs, and GW Pharmaceuticals (GWPRF).

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some clean-energy-related stocks to your portfolio, the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy Portfolio ETF (NYSEMKT: PBW ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.
The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The PowerShares ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is 0.70%. The fund is fairly small, too, so if you're thinking of buying, beware of possibly large spreads between its bid and ask prices. Consider using a limit order if you want to buy in. - [By Wall Street Sector Selector]
