Shares of Gilead gained 104% in 2013, besting Amgen‘s (AMGN) 35% rise, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals(REGN) 61% advance, and Biogen Idec(BIIB) 91% increase but lagging Celgene’s (CELG) 115% rise.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

On a quiet day for big biotech, shares of Celgene have fallen 0.2% to $94.73 at 10:58 a.m., while Amgen (AMGN) has gained 0.1% to $138.69, Gilead Sciences (GILD) has dipped 0.1% to $109.33, Biogen Idec (BIIB) has dropped 0.7% to $34167 and Regeneron (REGN) is off 0.9% at $358.76.

  • [By Keith Speights]

Unfortunately, Amgen doesn't look as hot when stacked up against only other biotech stocks. The poorer showing stems in large part from incredible runs by the two companies that make up a higher percentage of the ETF's holdings than Amgen does. Both Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: REGN  ) and Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD  ) are up more than 50% so far this year.

Smithfield Foods is the largest pork processor in the U.S., with 28% of the market, but Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  ) is second at 17% followed by Brazil's JBS with its Swift brand at 11%. Cargill and Hormel Foodsround out the top five with single-digit share each.

  • [By Arturo Cuevas]

It looks like you and I will be eating more chicken this 2014. Retail beef prices remain at record highs, and we consumers will likely be driven more toward comparatively cheaper chicken meat in 2014. Given this trend, loading up on shares of Sanderson Farms (NASDAQ: SAFM  ) , Pilgrim's Pride (NASDAQ: PPC  ) , andTyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  ) should be worth considering.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Big Earnings Movers: JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JKS) is up 12.9% at $33.29 after reporting better-than-expected earnings and a strong forecast. Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE: TSN) is up 2.2% at $29.41 on good results. InterCloud Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ICLD) is up 48.5% at $14.05 following last Friday’s even bigger run-up in the shares.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The problem that Smithfield had faced primarily came from its farm operations, which have suffered from a lack of profitability. By contrast, Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  ) has seen rising volumes from its pork-processing division and got its best profit margins from that area, despite seeing falling prices. But Smithfield thinks even that portion of the business will start making money again by next year.
