Top 5 Airline Stocks To Own Right Now

WASHINGTON As several airlines blamed a pilot shortage for cutting service this month, the Government Accountability Office reported mixed findings Friday about whether there would be enough pilots over the next decade.

The GAO found that pay has fallen during the last decade, suggesting that demand hasn't yet outpaced the supply.

But airlines will need roughly 1,900 to 4,500 pilots per year over the next decade, and the GAO found that airlines could have trouble hiring amid tougher training rules as mandatory retirements at 65 thin the ranks.

Despite this demand, the GAO found that pilots might work abroad, in the military or in another occupation for better wages. GAO said 11 of 12 regional airlines contacted were having trouble filling openings, but that mainline airlines weren't.

Hero Images Inc./Alamy Using a credit card to earn frequent flier miles is a popular way to get free travel. For example, I am flying to California this Thanksgiving. I was able to book my $650 roundtrip with 25,000 miles and a fee of $11.20. That means my miles were worth 2.6 cents each. Or, to put it a different way, I earned a 2.6 percent return on my credit card spending. However, which frequent flier strategy will be best for you is not always obvious. To make the smartest decision, you should ask yourself: On which airline should I earn my miles? For my chosen airline, which credit card should I use? Airline Choice If you are a frequent flier, then the answers may be obvious. For example, if you fly 30,000 miles a year on Delta (DAL) for work, then topping up your air miles with credit card miles makes a lot of sense. But if you don't travel a lot for business, then you should let the numbers guide your airline choice. And you really shouldn't think about a lifetime loyalty strategy. Instead, you should think about your immediate travel goal. A free trip to Hawaii? Or Europe? Or do you just want to fly home for Thanksgiving, like I did? Your answer impacts the airline that you should chose. When redeeming miles for a free trip, airlines offer multiple redemption tiers. For example, if you want a free trip in the continental United States, American Airlines (AAL) offers MileSAAver awards (25,000 miles for a round-trip ticket), but they are only available some of the time. AAnytime Awards cost 40,000 miles. That is a huge difference. A MileCard.com study showed big differences among airlines on how many miles are required, on average, to redeem for a free ticket. For example, if you want to fly to Hawaii, the average number of miles required was 65,463 at Delta vs. 82,246 at American. Here is a summary of the best airlines, and the miles required, by region. Remember, these are averages based upon historic data, and your mileage requirement may diff

Investors took a wait-and-see attitude Tuesday, but airline stocks lost altitude. The market is in a holding pattern until 2 p.m. Wednesday, when the Fed reveals details of this week's FOMC policy meetings, and whether it's ready to begin cutting back on its main economic stimulus program. If it does begin to taper, the next debate will begin immediately: Is that good or bad for investors? On Wall Street today, the Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) edged down 9 points, the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) fell nearly 6, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) lost 5 points. The Dow's gainers were led by a pair of companies hiking their dividends. 3M (MMM), which makes everything from Post-It notes to medical equipment, rose 3 percent after increasing its payout by 35 percent. And Boeing (BA) rose 1 percent. It boosted the dividend by 50 percent and announced a big stock buyback. The other big blue chip winner was Visa (V), which gained another 2.5 percent. Its stock is now up 43 percent from a year ago. On the downside, Verizon (VZ), IBM (IBM), McDonald's (MCD) and Microsoft (MSFT) all lost about one percent. Microsoft says it will not name a new CEO until next year. And airline stocks were broadly lower. United (UAL) and Delta (DAL) both fell 3 percent. American Airlines (AAL), which completed its merger with U.S. Airways last week, fell 2 percent. And Southwest (V) also lost 2 percent. Brokerage recommendations gave a boost to several issues. Data storage companies Seagate (STX), up 3 percent, and Western Digital (WDC), up 2.5 percent, following JP Morgan upgrades. And iRobot (IRBT) surged 17 percent after Raymond James gave it a 'strong buy.' Shares of Facebook (FB) rose 2 percent, hitting an all-time high. 10 Best New Stocks To Watch For 2015

Garry L./Shutterstock In America, we believe that everyone deserves a second chance. If you've seen your credit suffer due to bankruptcy, joblessness, medical bills or just a pattern of poor decisions, there is always a way for you to re-establish your credit. The problem is that you must obtain credit in order to build it, but it can be difficult to find a reputable lender when you have poor credit. A secured credit card can help. These cards require users to place a deposit with the bank as a condition of opening their account. The deposit is held as a security against default, but in all other ways secured cards are just like standard credit cards. Cardholders receive monthly bills that they must pay, and they will incur interest on any balance they carry over until the next month. The good news is that payments are reported to the major consumer credit reporting agencies, so that your credit score will rise with your record of timely payments. Also, some of these cards come with benefits such as rental car collision damage waiver coverage, and standard consumer protections under federal law. For example, the Fair Credit Billing Act ensures that credit card users do not have to pay for fraudulent charges or goods not received. Finally, nearly anyone can qualify for a secured card once they have discharged any bankruptcies and proven their identity. How We Chose the Winners While there are some excellent secured cards on the market, there are also some inferior products with excessively high rates and fees. We looked for cards with a low annual fee, low interest rates and an affordable minimum deposit. Other valuable benefits can include rental car coverage, a credit limit beyond the deposit amount, cellphone insurance and even a travel rewards program. These are all things applicants should consider when trying to find the best secured credit card. As you work to build credit with a secured credit card, it's also good to get into the habit of monitoring your credit. Free tools can help you do that, like at Credit.com, where you get two credit scores and an overview of your credit profile updated every month, along with a personalized plan to help you build your credit over time. Now, let's take a look at this month's Best Credit Cards in America picks for the best secured credit cards.

Why It Can Be Good to Take Blame in the Office

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- When troubles arise at the office, it's a pretty good bet someone in management will want to know "what went wrong." While blaming others can make you look bad, taking too much responsibility for a problem can make you look weak. The reality is that failures at work are bound to happen. Our experts weigh in on how to handle them without looking like a tattletale or a pushover.

"You don't want to be the fall guy, but don't want to be a snitch," says Robert Hosking, executive director at staffing firm OfficeTeam. "If you're the manager of a group project that failed, you need to be ready to own up to it and step up to the plate to resolve the issue."

Almost one third -- 30% -- of senior managers said they have accepted the blame at work for something they didn't do, according to an OfficeTeam survey. Out of those, 34% said they took the fall because they felt "indirectly responsible" for the problem, while 28% said they "just didn't want to get others in trouble."

"You can't look like you're trying to deflect," Hosking says. "With that said, if there are 10 people on a project, it wasn't your entire fault -- in most cases it's not cut and dried as to who's most responsible." When a problem needs answers, Ben Dattner, organizational psychologist and author of The Blame Game: How the Hidden Rules of Credit and Blame Determine Our Success or Failure, says it's best to be honest about what went wrong without directly saying "It was her fault," or "It was his fault." If your supervisor continually demands names of responsible parties, Dattner says it's important to answer questions honestly without intentionally throwing your colleagues under the bus. "It's about your intention," Dattner says. "If your boss asks you to describe a series of events, you have to tell the truth. If your colleague didn't get you a report on time and you needed that report to do your job, then you have to simply say, 'No, he didn't send it.'" If you're unsure of the difference between conveying facts and conveying blame, Dattner says to imagine that your co-workers are all listening in as you describe what happened to your supervisor. Also see: Not Every Office Lets Fans Fly Their Team Colors>>

"Imagine all of your colleagues are in the room with you as you answer these questions," he says. "Don't betray them, but do give an honest account of what happened. Keep stressing to your supervisor the big picture of what went wrong and how you're going prevent it from happening again."

Keep in mind that if a manager wants to know who is responsible, they may not be seeking confrontation -- many times they just want to have a dialogue with whoever made the mistake to ensure the problem doesn't happen again, Dattner says.

"What enlightened managers do is overcome the tendency to rush to judgment and take a mindful, deliberate process to figure out what's going on," he says. "Sometimes they're not looking for someone to blame; it's really more of a good faith effort to figure out what went wrong and how we can fix it moving forward."

Unfortunately, many employees are too quick to place blame on others because they're scared, says Joseph Grenny, co-author of the national best-seller Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High. "When a mistake is made we all go back to when we were 4 years old and we screwed up in kindergarten -- we feel threatened that we're about the be shamed, but this isn't about shame, it's about results," Grenny says. "Forget about who is bad -- shine the light on how we get better results next time." When you're speaking to your supervisor about what went wrong, Grenny says to try something disarming that will help your boss feel more secure that the team can get back on track easily. It may be the best course of action to say something like, "Wow. This didn't work, and it's not acceptable. We're going to make changes next time that ensure we can achieve our mission." Also see: How to Keep the Work Party From Getting Too Crazy>> "That sends the message to your boss that you believe this is about results -- not shame," Grenny says. Even if you're tempted to blame someone to resolve a situation, Grenny says the fallout can potentially be damaging to your career and create unnecessary hardships with co-workers.

"The real threat is that the people you blame and others you work with can really lose trust in you, so then you have to recover both from the original problem and the damaged trust," Grenny says. "Now it's a question of 'Can I trust your competence, and can I trust your motives?'"

Don't be fooled by a "quick fix" of blaming others, Dattner stresses, even if it seems appealing at the moment.

"It's tempting in the short term, but problematic in the long term," he says. "If you are constantly taking credit for the good things and none of the bad, you will never be able to adequately assess room for improvement, and employees are not going to trust you or want to work with you."

In most cases, the best option for employees and managers is to accept blame and take steps to ensure the problem never arises again, says Joe Utecht, crisis response manager with Ceridian LifeWorks. "Managers need to share responsibility for mistakes," Utecht says. "As a manager you want to people to accept responsibility, grow and learn from mistakes. When you concentrate on behavioral change rather than making a situation personal, you are on the road to creating a great workplace environment. You want your employees to feel good about themselves, feel encouraged and feel empowered so they can help your company improve and succeed and move forward."

The Partners Value Fund's Investor Class returned -1.4% in the third calendar quarter, compared to a +1.1% return for the S&P 500 and flat results for the Russell 3000. The largest companies were generally the strongest performers in the third quarter, most notably Microsoft (MSFT) (+12%), Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) (+9%) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) (+4%) for our Fund. Conversely, small cap stocks fell sharply in July and again in September, with the Russell 2000 index finishing down 7.4% for the quarter. While smaller companies account for approximately 10% of our net assets, these stocks drove most of the Fund! s quarterly decline. Iconix Brand Group (ICON) (-14%), Redwood Trust (RWT) (-14%) and Interval Leisure Group (IILG) (-13%) were the primary small cap detractors. Energy holdings Range Resources (RRC) (-22%) and Apache (APA) (-6%) also impacted results as natural gas and oil prices dropped. We remain optimistic on the long-term outlooks for all five of these stocks, which trade at moderate to large discounts to our business value estimates.

DRII stock hit the market just last year at $16.15 and now trades above $20. Only 3 analysts follow it, and earnings estimates aren't spectacular. FY14 earnings are expected to be 92 cents, down from 96 in FY13 — but they’re also supposed to rise to $1.06 in FY15. The problem with Diamond is its debt structure. It paid $88 million on its $414 million in long-term debt last year. If it gets its interest payments refinanced, it's worth a look because revenue growth is strong.

    Interval Leisure Group (IILG)

Interval Leisure Group (IILG) feels to me like it has been bought and sold many times, probably because it's one of the oldest timeshare stocks, founded in 1976. Its 2,900 resorts are spread across 16 nations, with more than 2 million owners. It also diversifies its revenue stream by selling ownerships, and by managing and renting properties. Virtually ever major hotel chain is partnered with it.

Diller then spins off some of these entities into public companies, as he did with Home Shopping Network (HSNI) and timeshare company Interval Leisure Group (IILG). The company's 52 week high was $80.64, it trades right now at $66. I'd love to make this one of my stocks to buy in the below the $50 mark, but IACI would be a bargain under $55.

APC-100 is an anti-inflammatory drug candidate. In animal studies, ! APC-100 demonstrated potent anti-androgenic and anti-inflammatory activities against prostate tumors growing in animal models and sh owed a safety profile in preclinical safety studies. APC-100! has demonstrated pharmacological characteristics as an oral or injectable anti-inflammatory and anti-androgenic drug candidate with multiple mechanisms of action. APC-100 decreases secretion of human Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), by human prostate cancer cells growing in mice and also increases the time-to-tumor progression and survival of PCa mice with CS-PCa and CR-PCa tumors.

APC-200 is a drug candidate for both castrate-sensitive and castrate resistant prostate cancer. APC-200 blocks androgen-induced hydrogen peroxide production and inflammation and inhibits mouse PCa. In animal studies, APC-200 was an inhibitor of chronic inflammation, also completely inhibiting oxidase mediated high rates of hydrogen peroxide. APC-200 is developed as an oral drug, specifically in appropriate formulations for patients with PCa.

APC-300 is a multi-targeted small molecule therapeutic drug, which demonstrates anti-inflammatory, pro-apoptotic anti-cancer activ ities for prostate cancer patients, including men with metastatic CR-PCa. In pre-clinical in vivo studies conducted, APC-300 demonstrated the ability to inhibit human tumor growth and kill both castrate-sensitive and castrate-resistant human prostate cancer tumors. It also decreased human tumor volumes and suppressed local metastasis in human xenograft models, where malignant human prostate or human melanoma tumor tissue was grafted onto athymic immunosuppressed experimental mice. APC-300 inhibited human androgen receptor protein production in these studies. It also inhibited PSA secretion by human PCa cells, which is a serum marker for human prostate cancer.

The Company competes with Medivation, TEVA Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and AstraZeneca.

Although th! e market ! seems to be losing traction, and even losing ground now, the same can't be said of every single stock. A handful of stocks like China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc. (NASDAQ:CJJD), Vuzix Corp. (OTCBB:VUZI), and Adamis Pharmaceuticals Corp. (NASDAQ:ADMP) are forging ahead, doling out gains against the grain. Not that moving higher while other names are moving lower is a sure sign that ADMP, VUZI, and CJJD will remain in their uptrends indefinitely, but it sure doesn't hurt their odds. Here's a closer look at each one and why you'd want to add them to your watchlist.
