Advisors' Opinion:

Stericycle (SRCL) alone operates globally and generates close to $2 billion in annual revenues. Despite Stericycle's strong business performance during the recently reported quarter, the stock detracted from performance, partially driven by headlines of rumored regulatory action related to one of the Company's incinerators. We believe the issue is not meaningful to results and we would be willing to add to shares on pullbacks related to this. Stericycle's stock trades in the mid to high-颅eens EBITDA range, but the company routinely purchases smaller competitors for just 3X-颅X EBITDA. This accretion is a byproduct of Stericycle's competitive positioning and we believe it paves a multi-颅ear runway for double-颅igit growth.

We're seeing the exact same setup in shares of Stericycle (SRCL), but with one big difference: This stock hasn't broken out yet. Stericycle is another ascending triangle pattern, in this case with a resistance level at $120. A breakout above that $120 price ceiling is the signal that it's time to take this trade.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable – instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $120 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on the SRCL trade.

As of March 06, 2012, it operated 819 stores in 40 states. Stage Stores, Inc. is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On Friday, Stage Stores (NYSE: SSI  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is specialty department store retailer Stage Stores (SSI), which is set to release numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Stage Stores to report revenue of $397.57 million on earnings of 53 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Stage Stores is pretty high at 11.6%. That means that out of the 30 million shares in the tradable float, 3.58 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 4.2%, or by about 145,000 shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of SSI could easily surge sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts jump to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, SSI is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and just below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last three months and change, with shares moving between $17.51 on the downside and $20.32 on the upside. Any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range post-earnings could trigger a big breakout trade for shares of SSI.

If you're bullish on SSI, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.91 to $20.32 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 233,200 shares. If that breakout begins post-earnings, then SSI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $23 to $25 a share.

I would simply avoid SSI or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then takes out some key

Stage Stores Inc.(SSI) said it agreed to sell its Steele’s retail stores to financial services firm Hilco Global later this year, which contributed to a drop in fiscal fourth-quarter earnings. The top line missed expectations, and the sales view for the year also fell below the consensus view.

Advisors' Opinion:

Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-A  ) (NYSE: BF-B  ) will release its quarterly report on Wednesday, and investors have generally been quite pleased with the performance of the spirits company, sending its stock to all-time record highs. But as competition from rivals Diageo (NYSE: DEO  ) and Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ  ) becomes ever tougher, the bigger question is whether Brown-Forman can keep earnings growing even if its revenue doesn't climb as fast as its peers' sales.

Strong consumer staples firms usually become market leaders as folks get giddy-drunk on a big bull market ascent. So buy one of the world largest boozemakers, Diageo (DEO). It a high-quality, moderate-growth story that has a 2.3% dividend yield. And if I wrong on the bull market? Consumer staples do relatively well during the early stages of a bear market as well.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Still, beer, wine, and spirits have all seen a rise in competitive pressure lately. In the spirits space, Diageo (NYSE: DEO  ) has moved aggressively toward growth-spurring initiatives like flavored spirits, enticing a new demographic to consume more of its products. Meanwhile, players in the wine industry are facing rising input costs from higher grape prices, forcing them either to accept narrower profit margins, or try to pass higher prices on to consumers.
